Support Groups & SMART Goals
At CUP, we believe recovery is strengthened by supportive communities, practical tools, and meaningful goals. Below you’ll find pathways to recovery and wellness for individuals and families, along with faith-based approaches to setting goals that align with your journey.
For Individuals in Recovery
SMART Recovery
SMART Recovery offers a self-empowering approach for anyone ready to overcome addictive behaviors. Built on more than 25 years of scientific evidence and peer support, SMART provides practical tools to help people create lasting change and live healthier, more balanced lives.
In SMART Recovery meetings—available online and in-person—participants design their own recovery plan and learn to:
Build and maintain motivation
Cope with urges
Manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
Live a balanced, fulfilling life
SMART Recovery is flexible: many participants also work with therapists, use medication, or join other support groups. Meetings are available worldwide, with specialized resources for veterans, family and friends, and many others.

Setting SMART Goals in Recovery
Setting goals gives your recovery direction and purpose. SMART goals help break down your vision into clear, realistic steps.
A SMART goal is:
Specific – Clearly define what you want to accomplish.
Measurable – Track your progress and celebrate small wins.
Achievable – Make sure your goal is realistic and possible.
Relevant – Connect your goal to your life and values.
Time-Bound – Give your goal a deadline to stay focused.
By setting SMART goals, you build confidence and motivation on your journey to a life beyond addiction.
For Loved Ones
Family & Friends
If you love someone struggling with addiction, you don’t have to face it alone. SMART Recovery’s Family & Friends program is a supportive, secular community that uses proven tools to help families and friends encourage positive change.
Based on the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) model, this program helps you:
Communicate positively, even in tough times
Use positive reinforcement to encourage healthy choices
Prioritize self-care and boundaries for your own well-being
Studies show CRAFT can be more effective than traditional intervention models in helping loved ones enter treatment.

CRAFT Model
CRAFT teaches you practical ways to support your loved one while caring for yourself:
Learn new ways to communicate and connect
Focus on what’s working and let consequences guide change
Make your own wellness a priority for a healthier family dynamic
Dr. Robert J. Meyers, Ph.D., developed CRAFT to give families hope, tools, and real results.
Faith-Based SMART Goals
Faith can transform how we set goals and make plans for recovery and life. If you’re seeking a Christ-centered approach, consider this faith-based SMART Goals process:
Specific: Pray and ask God for clear direction.
Meaningful (instead of Measurable): Let prayer make your goals meaningful and aligned with His purpose.
Attainable (instead of Achievable): Recognize the resources God has already provided and trust Him for the rest.
Relevant: Ensure your goals honor the gifts and calling He has placed on your life.
Timely: Trust God’s timing, not just your own schedule.
“God wants us to have goals, but He wants to be at the center of them, so we can learn to live, love, and lead like Jesus at home and at work.”
